Busy Macomb County intersection raises safety concerns

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A concerned mother living in Chesterfield Township is highlighting the dangers at an intersection near her home.

You’ve likely driven through 21 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue.

Felicia Comeaux reached out to Local 4 about the intersection saying that she’s witnessed more crashes there than anywhere else.

Comeaux is an army veteran with three children -- ages 7, 12 and 15. She said just leaving the driveway is concerning. Her street, Briarfield Road, is often used as a cut-through for drivers who want to avoid the 21 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue intersection.

The number of speeding vehicles in the area was astounding.

Police said traffic volume is way up and with more drivers comes more crashes.

An estimated 27,000 cars on Gratiot Avenue move through 21 Mile Road every day and nearly 22,000 cars move through the other way.

That’s why this Army mom has made it her mission to make where she lives a little more safe.

Shawn Ley spoke with a UPS driver who broke down what he sees at the intersection and the reasons why it’s so dangerous.
