Police said Robert Cavanaugh, 60, was beaten to death on Dec. 24, 2024, near the 26000 block of Dequindre Road.
Cavanaugh, who lived in a Madison Heights mobile home park, was known for rescuing animals. His family said he died trying to save a dog that was being abused by its owner on Christmas Eve.
Family left heartbroken
His sister, Jane Thompson, is still in shock. Her brother was found dead in the middle of the street. When the family went to identify his remains at the medical examiner’s office, they were told his injuries were so severe that they couldn’t see him.
Cavanaugh was reportedly beaten to death with a pipe because he stepped between a helpless dog who was being abused and its owner.
Suspect arrested, charged
When Rodney Beasley was taken into custody, Cavanaugh’s family learned he spent 20 years in prison for a major crime and another 10 years for a different crime. They believe Beasley’s history of violence was well known, and he should have never been released.
Beasley was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a 4-year felony.
Police said the official cause and manner of Cavanaugh’s death are still under investigation and that they will present the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for additional charges once detectives learn more.
Beasley was given a $100,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Madison Heights Police Department at 248-585-2100.
