OXFORD, Mich. – A Christmas Eve marred by violence has left the Oxford Township community in shock.
Prosecutors have charged Malik Letroy Webb, 29, with the murder of 71-year-old Dr. Barbara Wolf, the severe injury of her daughter, and the shooting of another man, among other violent acts.
One person was killed and two people were injured in a shooting that happened before 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2024, on Ray Road between Lapeer and N. Oxford roads.
Webb is charged with:
- One count of felony murder, with carjacking as the underlying felony.
- Three counts of assault with intent to murder.
- Three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault).
- Carjacking.
- Carrying a concealed weapon.
- Weapons -- firearm -- possession by a prohibited person.
- Nine counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony -- third offense.
Sheriff’s office says victims were trying to help
Authorities say Webb was on his way home to Flint after attending a Christmas party when he ended up in the Oxford area.
Following a car accident, he allegedly attempted to carjack a 39-year-old Oxford woman by holding a gun to her head. Later, after his car ended up in a ditch near Ray Road and North Oxford Road, Webb allegedly unleashed a spray of bullets, firing roughly 30 rounds.
Calling the acts “vile” and “disturbing,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said what made it even more senseless was each victim had been trying to help Webb.
“The cars that had stopped were seeking to ask if he was OK, and they were rewarded with violence,” Bouchard said. “There’s no way to understand how somebody can be that violent, that murderous to someone who’s trying to reach out to them on Christmas Eve. This is a person who shouldn’t see the light of day.”
1 killed, 2 injured in shooting
Barbara Wolf, a clinical psychologist and teacher, was killed during the shooting. Her daughter, who was with her, suffered critical injuries after being shot in her upper body.
“She has some very horrific injuries,” said Bouchard. “She was shot multiple times.”
Another man was also shot in the arm during the incident and has been released from the hospital.
Police arrested Webb with the 9mm gun in his hand. Records show a history of violence dating back a decade with Webb recently released from prison.
“We appreciate the prosecutor throwing the proverbial book at him. It’s overdue, I think, given his criminal history,” said Bouchard.
In a statement, McLaren Health Care expressed “profound sadness” regarding Wolf’s death:
“As news has spread about this tragedy, there is immense grief, shock, and sadness from the many lives that Barb touched, both within McLaren and in the communities she served.
“Devoted to the mental health and emotional well-being of so many as a clinical psychologist and teacher, Dr. Wolf will be remembered for her heart, spirit, and kind presence. Her career was one of service to our patients, our providers, our trainees, and the communities McLaren is honored to serve.”
Webb was arraigned Saturday in Novi and is being held without bond in the Oakland County Jail. His next court appearance is set for Jan. 6, 2025 in Rochester Hills.
