Livonia grandfather dies in ice fishing incident after wife is killed in crash

Tragedy hits Metro Detroit family twice within days

PONTIAC, Mich. – An Oakland County grandfather who was hospitalized in an ice fishing incident has died just days after his wife was killed in a crash.

According to authorities, Scott Christopher Levitan was removed from life support Tuesday, Dec. 31, and died early that afternoon. He had fallen through the ice while fishing with his grandson in Addison Township on Thursday, Dec. 26.

The ice reportedly broke while they were drilling a hole, causing the grandfather to fall into the water. His 15-year-old grandson called 911 and attempted to get his grandfather out of the water, but he fell in after more ice broke.

A neighbor saw them fall and quickly grabbed his kayak and went out to them on the water.

He assisted the teen out of the water and then grabbed another kayak to help the grandfather. The teen was treated for his injuries and Levitan was hospitalized in critical condition.

Levitan’s wife, identified as Mary Lou Levitan, died the next day. Authorities said she was traveling to pick up her husband’s vehicle on Friday, Dec. 27, when a 19-year-old driver crossed the center lane of Rochester Road and struck the Jeep she was a passenger in head-on.

She died almost exactly 24 hours after her husband broke through the ice.

Two other people inside the Jeep were also injured in the crash.
