“I think this would keep going if we didn’t catch it when we did, and I think I’m lucky she’s still with us because it could’ve been worse,” the alleged victim’s mother said.
Brian Scott McCarrick of Bay City is accused of grooming and assaulting a middle school-aged girl multiple times. According to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, McCarrick met the victim at her school, picked her up, assaulted her, and dropped her off at the bus stop on multiple occasions. Her mother said McCarrick even went into her home twice.
“This is somebody who has a family of his own,” said Sheriff Swanson. “McCarrick had no criminal history -- he had traffic tickets. They are experts at being predators.”
The mother tells Local 4 she never suspected anything was wrong at first.
“I was driving her to the bus stop. I would watch her walk out of my vehicle onto the bus. I was picking her up from the bus stop,” she said.
McCarrick, who worked as a handyman near the alleged victim’s home, reportedly used Snapchat to connect with the girl over a month ago. Sheriff Swanson said he provided her with three phones to communicate and even infiltrated group chats with her 13-year-old friends.
The victim’s mother began noticing her daughter’s behavior changing. She said she became more secretive, angry, and expressed suicidal ideations. One night, the mother sensed something was wrong when her daughter refused to open her bedroom door.
“When I opened it again, I know there was no guessing—I saw a head, and my husband looked out the window, and there was a car parked out there,” she said.
McCarrick fled the scene but left behind a phone, which police used to track him to his home in Bay City.
The alleged victim’s mother adds that when the phone was taken, McCarrick “got so involved” that he called the girl’s middle school to do a welfare check “saying he was a family friend.”
The mother also said McCarrick would stay in a neighborhood nearby with an ideal view of the home.
“I’m scared to turn my back. I have other children — this was in my home,” she said. “I’m living a nightmare, so thank God he’s in jail.”
Sheriff Swanson believes there may be more victims — possibly in other cities and counties. Call 911 or the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office at 810-257-3422 if you have more information.
“Nothing is going to stop him from coming to Oakland County, Wayne County, Washtenaw County, Bay County, Midland — Predators have no boundaries,” said Sheriff Swanson.
McCarrick remains behind bars, now charged with 11 counts — nine involving criminal sexual conduct charges. He was arrested as part of the Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team or GHOST. Working with 63 sheriffs and crossing into nine states, Sheriff Swanson said GHOST, established in 2018, has arrested 215 predators so far.
