Metro Detroit couple make history climbing Mt. Everest together

It’s about that time of year when you might be thinking about your goals for the new year. Maybe you want to get more active or spend more time outdoors.

Well, a Michigan couple can cross “climbing Mount Everest” off the list as they became the first married couple from Michigan to reach the top of the world. As members of the Sikh faith, they also did something that’s never been done before.

There’s that old adage that the couple that plays together stays together.

Harpreet and Navneet Cheema have been climbing mountains since 2019.

From Mount Kilimanjaro to Mount Denali, they’ve reached five of the seven summits. Their latest expedition was to Mount Everest.

Michigan’s minimum wage to increase in 2025. What to know

Michigan’s minimum wage will increase twice in 2025.

The state’s minimum wage is currently $10.33. On Jan. 1, 2025, it will increase to $10.56. On Feb. 21, 2025, it will increase to $12.48.

The tip credit, or subminimum wage for tipped workers, will be phased out over the next five years. On Feb. 21, 2025, tipped workers will be paid 48% of the minimum hourly wage.

Fire outside University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor destroys 2 vehicles

An early morning fire outside the University of Michigan Hospital has totaled two vehicles.

According to authorities, the fire started at about 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, on the top floor of a parking garage on West Medical Center Drive. The Ann Arbor Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire, but two vehicles were destroyed and a third suffered minor heat damage.

‘Parent’s worst nightmare': Michigan man accused of grooming, assaulting 13-year-old girl

A 32-year-old man is facing multiple sexual assault charges after allegedly grooming and assaulting a 13-year-old.

According to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, Bay City resident Brian Scott McCarrick infiltrated the child’s social circle and had been facilitating meetings unknown to the parents. The assaults came to light when the 13-year-old’s mother reportedly checked on their child and found the bedroom window open and the suspect running away.

Swanson said McCarrick began speaking with the child and her friends and would drop off phones to communicate with them. He allegedly would pick her up from the middle school parking lot and take her to and from the bus stop.

Multiple assaults reportedly occurred.
