Man killed while helping driver of rollover crash on Lodge Freeway

Police urge people to stay inside vehicles following crashes

DETROIT – A 28-year-old man from Southfield was killed on New Year’s Day when he was struck by a car as he was attempting to help the driver of a rollover SUV.

The incident began at about 2:30 a.m. on the Lodge Freeway, near Webb Street. According to authorities, the driver of a Jeep lost control and hit the median, causing the vehicle to roll over. The man, who was a passenger in the Jeep, exited to help the driver get out and was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu.

He died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Malibu stopped and has been cooperating with the investigation.

Michigan State Police are reminding people to stay inside their vehicles in the event of a crash. If someone has to leave the vehicle, they are urged to get as far away from traffic as possible.
