WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A stretch of Old M-14 (Ann Arbor Road) and a portion of Edward Hines Drive in Livonia will be closed for bridge work.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be replacing bridges on Old M-14 over the Middle Rouge River, which was built in 1925, and Edward Hines Drive over Ann Arbor Road, which was built in 1948.

The construction includes rebuilding intersections and updating traffic signals. According to MDOT, the project is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Ann Arbor Road closure

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2024, Ann Arbor Road will be closed between Newburgh Road and Market Street, west of Levan Road.

Traffic heading eastbound on Ann Arbor Road will be detoured via northbound Newburgh Road to eastbound Plymouth Road, and westbound Ann Arbor Road traffic will be detoured via westbound Plymouth Road to southbound Newburgh Road to westbound Ann Arbor Road.

Edward Hines Drive closure

Beginning in early spring, Edward Hines Drive will be closed between Newburgh and Wayne roads.

MDOT plans to demolish and rebuild the Edward Hines Drive bridge over Ann Arbor Road, demolish and rebuild the shared-use path, and rebuild the pavement leading up to the bridge.

The Department of Transportation said the shared-use path will be maintained via a temporary bridge for pedestrians only.

Eastbound Edward Hines Drive traffic will be detoured via northbound Newburgh Road, eastbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road, southbound Farmington Road and westbound Joy Road back to eastbound Edward Hines Drive. Westbound Edward Hines Drive will be detoured via eastbound Joy Road, northbound Farmington Road, westbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road and southbound Jughandle Road back to westbound Edward Hines Drive.

A specific date on when the construction and road closure will begin is unclear.

MDOT said more work will happen later in the year at two intersections on Ann Arbor Road—Newburgh and Plymouth roads—for rebuilding and traffic signal updating.
