STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – The old pair of eyeglasses you have in a drawer at home or a hearing aid that cannot be used any more could help someone else around the world.

Our January Go 4 It event focuses on helping people who lack access to vision and hearing solutions.

Local 4 is partnering with the Sterling Heights Lions Club to collect eyeglasses and hearing aids.

“We have the ability to go to an eyeglass outlet and get new glasses every year or every other year-- other countries don’t have that,” Sterling Heights Lions Club President Rev Robert Roscoe said.

Last year, the Sterling Heights Lions collected and donated more than 9,000 eyeglasses to those in need around the world.

“You have kids that are blind… you have kids that can’t read, but if they get just a simple pair of glasses, they’ll be able to read (and) see the blackboard,” Roscoe said.

Eyeglasses of all kinds are accepted. Children’s glasses are especially needed.

“Go get the glasses and bring them to us because it’s so important,” Roscoe said. “They may not be important to you because you got another pair of glasses because you have that that capability of getting new glasses. But there’s someone out there that needs a pair of glasses.”

The “Recycling Sight and Sound” event is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Henry Ford OptimEyes Super Vision Center on Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights.

We’ll be collecting old eyeglasses and hearing aids from anyone who has them lying around.
