DETROIT – A Detroit police officer who had been on the job for just over a year was killed in a hit-and-run crash while on the way home after completing his shift.
Interim Detroit police chief Todd Bettison said the crash happened just after midnight on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, in the area of Hoover and Greiner streets on the city’s east side.
Officer Cameron Richardson was killed in the crash. Richardson is a father to two daughters and a veteran of the military.
Witnesses told police that a white van was attempting to make a left turn in front of Richardson’s Jeep, when they struck his vehicle and caused it to rollover. The white van left the scene of the crash, but was found a “short distance” away. A firearm was found inside the van, according to police.
Police have executed two search warrants in connection to the investigation and taken two people who were inside the van at the time of the crash into custody.
Police said the suspect believed to have been driving the white van has been identified as a 28-year-old man. They are asking him to turn himself in to police and “do a safe surrender.”
