Detroit woman’s home vandalized after viral New Year’s Eve party

DETROIT – An innocent family has been caught in the middle of a violent feud that has nothing to do with them.

At the center of it all is a viral video shot at a New Year’s Eve party.

Since that video hit the internet - multiple have been hurt and homes have been vandalized.

The Detroit Police Department is investigating the situation.

Kiah Thomas was caught in the middle of this and had nothing to do with it.

“This window was completely busted out. The top and the bottom. As you can see, it’s still some glass down here,” said Thomas.

At first, Thomas was wondering why a group of about 20 people would target her and her 9-year-old son’s home on Detroit’s west side.

“They were really trying to get in,” said Thomas. “This door was open and there was blood all on the handle.”

The confusion lasted until she saw a video that sparked the investigation.

It appears to show the person that used to live in this house, Kayla L-Asi, along with a group of people, allegedly breaking into a home on Burlingame Street to steal the ashes of someone’s loved one.

“That’s disgusting. It’s just a lot. People have to grow up and learn how to talk through situations. And it shouldn’t have went that far,” Thomas added.

Apparently, that was retaliation from when she was beat up during a New Year’s Eve party at that same location, allegedly for propping her phone on the same shelf as the ashes.

Videos of both incidents have since gone viral.

Thomas just hates that she was caught in between a situation that she had literally nothing to do with, especially when her son was home.

“My 9-year-old was with me and he was downstairs. It’s was a very scary experience just to have 20 people outside of your home trying to get it. Then you guys have the wrong people. You’re not even here for me,” Thomas said.

With the unexpected damage, Thomas is looking for help with the repairs. If you want to help click here.

L-Asi was charged with first-degree home invasion and conspiracy, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kayla Shawn L-Asi (WDIV)

She was arraigned on Sunday, Jan. 5, and given a $50,000 bond. A bond re-determination is scheduled for Jan. 7.

Her probable cause conference is scheduled for Jan. 13, and her preliminary examination is set for Jan. 21.
