Police urge Bloomfield Township residents to ‘Lock your cars’ amid surge in alarming thefts

Investigators say victims in most cases are making a couple of common mistakes

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police are issuing a community alert about increasing vehicle burglaries and car break-ins across Bloomfield Township.

Investigators say the victims in most cases are making a couple of common mistakes.

“People have been leaving their vehicles unlocked with their keys inside of their cars,” said Officer Heather Glowacz with Bloomfield Township Police.

The series of car burglaries and vehicle thefts have some neighbors across the area on edge.

Police are scrambling to uncover who is behind the crimes. Officers are describing the reported vehicle burglaries as shocking.

“Dec. 1st through 31st, we had 10 cars stolen with their keys left inside,” Officer Glowacz said.

Police said another 27 vehicles were broken into throughout the month of December. According to investigators, only one of those vehicles was locked.

“It’s spread around the Township,” Glowacz said. “There’s not a specific spot that they’re hitting.”

The series of car burglaries is similar to the disturbing trend police in Beverly Hills, Michigan, reported in December 2024.

Officers said an unusual spike in car thefts in that city included 10 vehicles stolen from driveways.

For now, police in neighboring municipalities are collaborating and searching for leads in the crimes.

“Check your Ring cameras,” Glowacz said. “If anything looks suspicious, give us a call. Keep that film, and you can send it to us.”

Investigators are urging residents to be proactive, even if that means breaking some old habits.

Officers suggest locking your doors and removing items from your vehicle.
