Suspected driver arrested in hit-and-run that killed Detroit police officer

DETROIT – Police have taken a driver into custody in the hit-and-run that killed an off-duty Detroit police officer.

The crash happened just after midnight Sunday, Jan. 5, near the intersection of Hoover and Greiner streets. Police said Officer Cameron Richardson was driving home from work when a minivan crashed into his Jeep.

Witnesses told police that a white van was attempting to make a left turn in front of Richardson’s Jeep, when they struck his vehicle and caused it to roll over.

Richardson, a father to two daughters and a military veteran, was killed in the crash. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family. You can donate here.

Police said the van left the scene and was found a short distance from the crash with a gun inside.

Two people inside the van were taken into custody at the time. The suspected driver of the van was taken into custody Monday, Jan. 6.
