Video: Troopers jump median to avoid semi truck that hit police car on I-75

No major injuries reported

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Michigan State Police are reminding drivers of the state’s Move Over Law.

Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect back in 2019. It required drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.

The reminder comes as police released footage of a Dec. 12 crash on I-75 in Oakland County.

Three Michigan State Police troopers were investigating a crash near the 11 Mile Road ramp and had parked their patrol cars on the left shoulder and in the left lane with their emergency lights on to shield the crash scene.

According to authorities, a semi truck tried to use the left lane to pass traffic that was slowing down and exiting the freeway. and

The semi truck continued barreling down the left shoulder, heading toward two troopers and a tow truck driver who were near the scene of the original crash and had to jump the median wall to avoid being hit.

Police footage of the crash can be watched in the video player above.

Officials said the semi truck came to rest after crashing into an empty car that was involved in the first crash.

A trooper was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and released. Nobody else was hurt.

The driver of the semi truck was taken into custody for reckless driving.

Move Over Law

Drivers are required to slow down and move over for stationary emergency vehicles. If drivers can’t move over due to traffic, weather or other road conditions, drivers must slow down and pass with caution.

Drivers who don’t pull over or slow down could be issued a citation with a $400 fine and two points on their license. If a driver causes injuries or death, it becomes a felony with significant jail time.
