Man sentenced in fatal Oakland County hit-and-run that dragged pedestrian

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – A man from Warren has been sentenced after a hit-and-run in Madison Heights that killed a man in 2023.

According to authorities, on Sept. 13, 2023, Raiyan Chowdhury was driving southbound on Dequindre Road when he struck Thomas Kiogima Jr. near 12 Mile Road. Police said Chowdhury dragged the victim briefly before he fled the location.

Background: 32-year-old man charged in Madison Heights fatal hit-and-run

First responders found Kiogima in the road and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Chowdhury was later located and taken into custody by Madison Heights police. He was charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in death and tampering with evidence. His $10,000 bond was posted.

He was later found guilty by a jury of failing to stop. The tampering with evidence charge was dismissed.

Chowdhury was sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, to 60 days in jail, followed by two years of probation.
