Here’s the suggested detour for drivers during major I-696 closure in Oakland County

Two-year closure to begin on March 1, 2025

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation is about to close a portion of I-696 for two years, and here’s what to know if your usual commute will be affected.

An eight-mile stretch of I-696 is set to close, and MDOT suggests the following detour for eastbound drivers:

  • Head southbound on M-10 (Lodge Freeway), then to eastbound M-8 (Davison Highway), to northbound I-75 and back to eastbound I-696.

Westbound traffic will be maintained during the project.

What to know about the 2-year closure on I-696

  • The closure is expected to begin on March 1, 2025
  • The closure will last through sometime in 2027. MDOT officials said it’s expected to take about two years.
  • The project includes rebuilding the roadway, repairing bridges, updating drainage structures, and a plaza reconstruction.
  • Communities that will be impacted during the closure include the following: Ferndale, Hazel Park, Hunting Woods, Lathrup Village, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Southfield and Warren
  • Reconstruction is set for eastbound and westbound I-696 between Lahser Road and I-75 from 2025-2026. In 2027, road work will take place on I-696 between I-75 and Dequindre.
