DETROIT – As the Detroit Lions' divisional round playoff matchup against the Washington Commanders approaches, Lions fan and actor Jeff Daniels broke out in song while on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.
On Tuesday, Daniels sang about how he and Peyton Manning basically lifted the curse the Lions suffered for decades with tremendous losses.
You can listen to the song at the end of this article.
What’s the Curse of Bobby Layne?
It’s claimed that on Oct. 6, 1958, when the Lions traded Bobby Layne to the Pittsburg Steelers, Layne said he was the best quarterback in the league and the Lions “would not win for 50 years.”
Since then, the Lions never won a championship.
Fans believed the team was cursed since then, calling it the Curse of Bobby Layne.
Was the curse broken?
In Manning’s show, “Peyton’s Places,” in 2022, he and Daniels went to Ford Field to essentially reverse the curse of Bobby Layne.
Manning said the following items had to be brought to Ford Field to break the curse—Tobin’s Spirit Guide from the movie Ghostbusters, an object a person wore involved in the curse (Layne’s helmet) and filling up a tub with 100 cups of water and a cup of salt.
Instead of water, Manning said they used whiskey to fill the tub because Layne would have preferred it. Then, they read their “incantation” to officially restore the roar.
Did it work? Well, the Lions still haven’t won a championship so far. However, fans would know that since 2022, the Lions have been getting progressively better and better each season.
The Lions finished the 2022 season 9-8. In 2023, they finished 12 to 5 and made the playoffs. Now, for the 2024 season, the Lions finished 15-2 and made it to the playoffs once again.
