OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Part of I-696 is going to shut down for two years so the Michigan Department of Transportation can complete major road work.
When will the project start?
The closure for the final phase of the Restore the Reuther project is expected to begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
How long will the closure last?
The closure will last through sometime in late fall 2027. MDOT officials said it’s expected to take about two years.
What is the detour?
Eastbound drivers will be detoured south on the Lodge Freeway, east on the Davison Freeway, and north on I-75 before returning to I-696, according to MDOT.
Why is MDOT closing I-696 for two years?
Crews will shut down part of I-696 to complete the final phase of the Restore the Reuther project. The project will include pavement upgrades, 60 bridge repairs, a plaza reconstruction, and updates to 1,100 drainage structures, according to MDOT.
In addition to the new pavement on the eight-mile stretch, concrete patching will be done on a 1.5-mile stretch of I-696 from I-75 to Dequindre.
