A semi-truck carrying thousands of pounds of margarine caught on fire while traveling on a Michigan highway Wednesday night, officials said.

At around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, the Bath Township Fire Department responded to I-69, just west of Chandler Road, as mutual aid to DeWitt Township fire officials on a report of a semi-truck being on fire.

Bath Township fire officials said the driver safely detached the trailer.

The driver told them that they were carrying 42,000 pounds of margarine on the truck.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which was likely caused by a braking system malfunction, according to fire officials.

There was only one lane of traffic open in that area of westbound I-69 while the scene was cleared.
