VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. – Sixteen vehicles were involved in a pileup on I-94 in Southwest Michigan while blowing snow caused whiteout conditions, state police said.

At about 9:30 a.m. troopers received several reports about crashes happening on eastbound I-94 between mile marker 46 and 56 near Hartford in Van Buren County.

State police said that a crash involving three semi-trucks started a chain reaction and caused several more crashes and slide-offs.

In total, 10 cars and six semi-trucks were involved in the crash.

Minor injuries were reported, and state police say each person involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.

Crews closed the freeway earlier this morning for cleanup, but all eastbound and westbound lanes have since reopened.

“Thanks to all the troopers, officers, deputies, and emergency responders, near & far, for braving through dangerously frigid conditions to aid motorists, investigate the crash scene, and ultimately reopen the roadway,” state police said. “Your courage and commitment to service is not lost on any of us. For the sake of safety, motorists are asked to continue to drive slower, increase driving distance, and brake gently and much sooner. Have a safe and enjoyable rest of your day.”
