DETROIT – The Detroit Police Department has released video footage of a shooting and dragging of an officer on the city’s west side.
The incident occurred on Dec. 10, 2024, at 11:40 p.m. in the 19300 block of St. Marys Street near 7 Mile and Greenfield roads.
Officers were on routine patrol when they saw a vehicle blocking the sidewalk.
When they approached, officials said they saw two people in the vehicle.
When they asked them to exit the vehicle, the people in the car did not follow orders, causing one of the officers to try to open the door.

The officers, who are members of the 8th Precinct Special Operations Unit, which focuses on violent crimes in its area of coverage, maneuvered in front of the vehicle with their lights activated.
The video showed the officers shining their lights into the vehicle and asking two people to comply when the teen driver reversed the car.
With two officers aiming their guns and flashlights at the vehicle, one of the officers threw his flashlight at the driver’s window to try to gain access to the door handle.

There were three officers at the scene, one of which, after numerous commands, yelled, “You’re going to die,” before firing shots into the vehicle as the driver sped off, dragging one of the officers.
The car fled as the officers called for backup and for an EMS to attend to the injured officer, but was found nearby on Prevost Street.
The officer was taken to a hospital and has since been released.

After that, police found the 18-year-old a couple of blocks away.
They learned the teen was shot multiple times in the chest and arm.
Police believe they were one of the occupants of the vehicle that dragged the officer.
This person was in the hospital in critical condition. Police searched for the car’s driver, who later turned himself in.
He was questioned by investigators and released pending further investigation.
