A deputy has been charged after he allegedly left a gun in a lunch box in the parking lot of a Michigan high school, officials said.

An employee at Lapeer High School found the gun at 6:33 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

It was immediately turned over to the police department, and they determined it belonged to a law enforcement agency outside of the county.

Lapeer police learned that an off-duty Genesee County deputy had mistakenly left the gun while he was attending a basketball game at the high school on Monday night.

The police department submitted a warrant package to the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecutor’s office issued a warrant for one count of reckless use of firearm, which holds a punishment of 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the deputy, Jonathan Becher, was arraigned and released on a $500 personal recognizance bond.

“The City of Lapeer Police Department will continue to cooperate fully with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office’s internal investigation into this matter,” according to a release from the Lapeer Police Department. “The well being and safety of our citizens and the community we serve is and will always be our number one priority.”
