Have you heard about the “Snowmelt System”? There’s a city in the state of Michigan that doesn’t need to plow its roads when the snow comes.

Michigan is one of the snowiest places in the United States, thanks to the lake effect. It’s partly why one of our state’s nicknames is the Winter Wonderland.

But there’s one place in the state where residents don’t have to worry about shoveling. They don’t need to worry about salt. They haven’t since 1988.

Could Canada really become the 51st US state? Here’s what it would take

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said Canada should be the 51st U.S. state as he proposes erasing the 5,525-mile-long border that separates the countries and alleviating the need for tariffs he’s threatened against one of America’s top allies and trading partners.

The traditional Lower 48 states would become the contiguous 50 as the Canadian territory between the U.S. mainland and Alaska disappears, leaving Hawaii as the only noncontinental state.

“If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100% certain that they’d become a state,” Trump said recently.

Port Huron police, U.S. Marshals arrest 2 involved in January homicide case

The Port Huron Police Department has arrested two people in relation to the Jan. 28, 2025, homicide investigation.

On Feb. 12, 2025, the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a 22-year-old man who was a suspect based on intelligence provided by the Port Huron Major Crimes Unit.

Weather: Digging out in Metro Detroit with another snowstorm approaching -- Here’s what to expect

Metro Detroiters are digging out of 3 to 6 inches of snow, which fell from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning. A few spots may have higher totals.

The main area of snow has exited Southeast Michigan, and the Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings have been discontinued.
