A man has died after a trench collapsed during a construction project in Sanilac County on Wednesday.

According to Sanilac East Fire Authority officials, a chunk of dirt fell from an eight-foot-deep trench on top of the man on Feb. 12, 2025, just before 5 p.m. Members of the contracting company were down in the trench attempting to dig him out when first responders arrived at the scene on N Lakeshore Road in Forester Township.

Fire authority officials said the man’s chest and face were visual when they arrived, but he was dead.

Authorities assessed the scene and determined the trench was too unstable for first responders to enter. They then instructed the construction company employees to get out of the trench.

After planning and gathering resources to safely get the man out of the trench, the man was recovered just before midnight.
