3 children abandoned by mother, survived on prepared food left on porch each week, sheriff says

Three children were found living alone in “absolute squalor” after their mother abandoned them for years in a Pontiac rental home.

The children survived only on weekly drop-offs of prepared food and had not been to school since being abandoned, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies discovered the children after the landlord requested a welfare check. He contacted deputies because he had not heard from the mother since December and rent had been last paid in October. The landlord was concerned that something may have happened.

Top Russian and American officials will hold talks on ending the Ukraine war without Kyiv

Senior American and Russian officials, including the countries’ top diplomats, will hold talks on improving their ties and negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said Monday, in what would be the most significant meeting between the sides since Moscow’s full-scale invasion nearly three years ago.

Michigan Senate passes bill to amend minimum wage, tipped wage increases -- what this means

The Michigan Senate passed a Bill Thursday evening amending the minimum wage law that’s set to go into effect Friday, Feb. 21.

Senate Bill 8 changes the annual increase of the minimum hourly wage and tipped wage.

The minimum hourly wage would still rise to $12.48 on Feb. 21, but it would reach $15 an hour by 2027 instead of 2028.

Weather: Wind chills drop below zero in Metro Detroit, when to expect snow this week

After a snowy weekend, now the arctic air returns. It’s a cold start to the morning with wind chills in the low single digits to below zero. And if you think that is cold, it will be even colder Tuesday morning with wind chills falling to 10 below zero, if not colder.

Additional lake effect snow showers are pushing through early this morning and are expected to redevelop this afternoon with highly variable accumulations to around a half inch possible.

Drier weather settles in Tuesday and early Wednesday with highs only in the teens, close to 20.
