Part of I-696 to close this weekend ahead of major 2-year construction project

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A section of I-696 will be closed for two nights as crews prepare for the upcoming construction project that will close a portion of the roadway for two years.

I-696 closure scheduled for next week

Crews will close westbound I-696 from I-75 to Lahser Road at the following times:

  • 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, through 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22
  • 10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 through 6 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23

During this closure, crews will work on overhead electrical work and bridge deck sounding inspections, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 to westbound M-8 then northbound M-10 to westbound I-696.

This work is being done to prepare for the final phase of the Restore the Reuther project. It was initially scheduled to begin on March 1, but on Thursday, Feb. 27, MDOT released an update and said the closure would begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 3.

Upcoming major I-696 closure

During the two-year construction project, I-696 will be rebuilt from Lahser Road from 2025 to 2026, with road work happening between I-75 and Dequindre Road in 2027.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will close a portion of I-696 for two years beginning on March 3, 2025. (MDOT)

The project will include pavement upgrades, 60 bridge repairs, a plaza reconstruction, and updates to 1,100 drainage structures, according to MDOT.

This closure is expected to begin on March 3 and last through sometime in late fall 2027.

MDOT's recommended detour for drivers during the closure is to travel south on the Lodge, east on the Davison, and north on I-75 to return to I-696. (MDOT)
