HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A Hazel Park High School student has been arrested after a gun was discovered in his backpack during a search.
The incident occurred on Thursday (Feb. 27), when detectives identified the student who allegedly possessed the handgun and interviewed him.
Police said the student denied having the handgun, and detectives searched his locker and bag that were in his possession, where the gun was not found on the student or in his locker.
Officials said the student and his father were advised that the student would not be allowed back in school while the investigation continued.
That was when police said the student requested items from his locker.
He was accompanied by a detective who provided the items to the student. The student then said he had a backpack in a classroom that he needed.
Officials said he pointed to the backpack, and a detective searched it and found the handgun inside, leading to his arrest.
The student was transported to the Hazel Park Police Station and later transferred to Oakland County Children’s Village.
An investigation into the situation is ongoing and will be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor when completed.
A police canine was requested to search the building along with police and staff to ensure safety for all.
The police department said they do not believe there was any further threat to students or staff.
Out of an abundance of caution and support for all, the Hazel Park police said they will have additional officers on hand to make sure staff and students feel safe.
