Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress next week.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both of New York, announced that Slotkin will deliver the response on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
In the announcement, Schumer said Slotkin was “nothing short of a rising star in our party.”
“She will offer a bold vision of hope, unity, and a brighter future for everyone, not just the wealthy few at the top,” Schumer said in a release. “Elissa Slotkin will layout the fight to tackle the deep challenges we face today, chart a path forward, and shape the future of our nation.”
In a statement, Jeffries said Slotkin “will deliver a comprehensive and clear-eyed response to the President’s Joint Address and communicate that Democrats are fighting to lower the cost of living and protect Social Security and Medicaid while Republicans cut taxes for their billionaire donors and Elon Musk.”
This comes after Slotkin won the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan in November 2024. She previously served as a state representative for Michigan’s 7th district.
“I’m looking forward to speaking directly to the American people next week,” Slotkin said in a statement. “The public expects leaders to level with them on what’s actually happening in our country. From our economic security to our national security, we’ve got to chart a way forward that actually improves people’s lives in the country we all love, and I’m looking forward to laying that out.”
Schumer and Jeffries also announced that New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat will give the Spanish language response to the address.
