Autorama returns to Downtown Detroit

Autorama tickets for adults cost $28

DETROIT – The Motor City is rolling out the red carpet for hundreds of hot rods and customized trucks and motorcycles.

Huntington Place is revving this weekend with the return of Autorama.

Travel back in time inside hot rod heaven. At Autorama, what else is louder than any chrome engine? The bright, eye-catching custom paint.

Vanessa Smith shared why she likes returning to this car show who also brought along her husband, a first-time spectator.

The different cars, the different shapes, the models, the color, the material -- I find it relaxing, she said.

The car show is a one-stop shop for hot rods and classic cars spanning the mid-century and up, with some modern cars sprinkled throughout the venue.

Some of the rides are fitted for another dimension.

Knud Trioch, the owner of a 1951 Mercury, described his vision as being out-of-this world.

“The target in the beginning is it should be like a space racer and the car should look like a metal from outer space,” he said. “It should come out from a computer game.”

Meanwhile, the MegaMorph looked as if it came off the silver screen.

Not many can say they’ve seen a transformer in life.

“We have yet to see one come to life, so we decided to try to put some ideas together and make one come to life,” Cyndel Flores said.

Have you ever seen liquid lavender on a 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia?

The story behind the sweet ride is even sweeter. It’s on its way to Switzerland to a raffle winner, supporting a humanitarian cause.

Rodney Culp from the Metalmorphosis Charitable Foundation shared how his wife started an orphanage in Indonesia in 2010.

“We build a car every year to give away. All the proceeds from that go to the foundation,” he said.

Autorama runs Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, Mar. 2. Ticket prices for adults are $28 and children prices are $10 with free admission for kids below five years old. Attendees can get a discount if they purchase through O’Reilly Auto Parts.
