Howell seeks best Main Street in America title in USA Today’s 10Best Awards

HOWELL, Mich. – If you’re planning a trip to Howell this summer, you may find yourself exploring one of the best main streets in America. This city in Livingston County is among 20 others vying for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Award.

“These 20 places with charming main streets - offer more than just a road; these streets are living history, have a vibrant culture and serve as the hearts of their communities,” the list states.

Howell is known for its vibrant community, historic charm and summertime events that attract visitors from across the state. The city hosts the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest, Howell Melon Festival and a Sunday Farmers’ Market that kicks off the first Sunday in May.

Grand River Avenue is in the running to claim the prestigious title of best main street. It’s lined with buildings that house a variety of local businesses, including boutique shops and local eateries. The street is also where you’ll find the Howell Opera House and 2FOG’s Pub, where visitors can step into the prohibition era thanks to its speakeasy atmosphere.

Voting is open to anyone interested, with the opportunity to vote once per day until polls close at noon on Monday, April 7. The 10 winners will be announced on Wednesday, April 16.

Howell ranked No. 1 in 2024. It’s competing against other cities in states like Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey, Utah, California, Nevada, Vermont and Massachusetts.
