MONROE, Mich. – A Monroe man was arrested after police said his niece was found only in a diaper, injured and being chased by dogs Monday afternoon.

Monroe police received reports of a young child wearing only a diaper being chased by dogs in the 800 block of Washington Street just after 12 p.m. on March 17.

When officers arrived, they saw the child had injuries. Police said a nearby neighbor and witness helped the officers by wrapping the 4-year-old girl in a blanket while first responders arrived at the scene.

Police said the child was taken to a local hospital for treatment of exposure to the cold, as well as cuts and abrasions to her feet, legs and chest.

Officers learned that the girl’s 27-year-old uncle was responsible for caring for her.

The uncle was arrested and charged with child abuse in the fourth degree. Child Protective Services is now involved in the investigation.

“We thank the citizen callers who reported this and wish the victim a quick recovery,” said the Monroe Public Safety Department in a statement Wednesday.
