OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A man is in custody after police say he shot and injured another man in a parking garage at an Oakland County hospital Thursday morning.

Police said a Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital employee was shot twice by another employee. A warning was sent to staff about an “active shooter,” warning them to “run, hide, fight.” The hospital went into a lockdown.

Multiple police agencies responded to the scene of the shooting and cleared the hospital while searching for the shooter. A suspect was taken into custody in Macomb Township nearly 3 hours after the shooting.

Here’s a timeline of the active shooter situation at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital on Thursday, March 20, 2025:

7:08 a.m.

At 7:08 a.m. Troy police received a call from security at the hospital reporting that a shooting had happened in a parking garage.

Hospital staff receive the following alert:

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY -- There is an ACTIVE SHOOTER Troy Hospital in the Parking Structure building. Police are enroute. Please take immediate personal safety measure and follow the run, hide, fight guidelines. For those not currently at the facility, stay away. Do not return to the facility until the all clear has been signaled.

8:15 a.m.

At around 8:15 a.m., an employee at the hospital spoke to Local 4 about the situation.

Barbara, a medical assistant at the hospital, said she was just arriving to work when a coworker started screaming at her to “get back.”

“Get back into my vehicle, there’s an active shooter,” she said. “I saw police officers in the parking garage with their guns drawn, walking in a line and just a bunch of sirens. I was just getting ready to walk in to punch in for the day.”

She said she didn’t see a shooter or hear any gunshots.

8:45 a.m.

At around 8:45 a.m., the hospital released a statement confirming the hospital was on lockdown and that a single shooting victim was in the emergency department for medical treatment.

We are working with local law enforcement. Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital is on lockdown. One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment. Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time. Patients may call the department where they were scheduled for service directly. No other information is available at this time.

9:07 a.m.

At around 9:07 a.m., the Troy schools superintendent spoke to Local 4. Troy School District Superintendent Dr. Richard Machesky said the district has prepared for incidents like this.

“When there’s something that’s occurring outside of our schools in the community, we go into what we call a ‘minimum security mode,’ which is essentially students in the classroom, business as usual in the classroom, but we limit any access outside,” Machesky said.

Machesky said when the shooting happened the high school students were already inside their schools, which were sent into minimum security mode. Middle school and elementary students were being dropped off, so staff and parents escorted them inside.

Machesky said the district has an excellent relationship with the Troy Police Department and that they have a system in place to ensure they’re communicating effectively.

9:13 a.m.

At around 9:13 a.m., Troy police Lt. Ben Hancock held a press briefing to provide the media and public with more information about the shooting.

Hancock said the shooting appeared to be a targeted incident between two employees that knew each other. The suspect is accused of firing a handgun five times. The victim, a 25-year-old man from Troy, was shot twice in the arm and is being treated at the hospital. He is stable.

At the time, police were still working to clear the hospital, but they did not believe the suspect was at the hospital at that time. The victim was able to identify the shooter to investigators. Police declined to release any information about the suspect at this time.

9:45 a.m.

Just before 9:45 a.m., a suspect was taken into custody at a home on Breezeway Drive in Macomb Township.

Commander Jason Abro from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a home and saw a man matching the description of the suspected shooter. There were a few people living in the home the suspect was in and police are speaking to them.

The SWAT team from the sheriff’s office went door-to-door, asking nearby residents to see if they were safe as they were negotiating for the man to leave the home.

Once the man left the home, he was arrested.

12 p.m.

As of 12 p.m., Corewell Health said that the Troy hospital had been cleared and was resuming normal operations.

“The situation at Troy Hospital has been cleared, and we are resuming normal operations. Patients who had appointments that were canceled earlier today or have appointments later today may call the department where they were scheduled directly to be rescheduled or confirm their appointment. We are incredibly thankful for the quick actions of all our team members and law enforcement.”
