MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Lieutenant Gary Wiegand, the Macomb County Sheriff SWAT Team Commander, talked with Local 4 about how they successfully apprehended the suspect following the shooting at Troy Corwell hospital.
Wiegand said he was on his way to work Thursday morning (March 20) when he received the call that the suspect had been identified as a Macomb Township resident.
“So, at that point, we knew our shooter lives in our patrol area, so now that changes things,” Wiegand said.
He said as the suspect was pulling into his driveway, patrol cars were pulling up to the house.
“They’re seeing a vehicle that matches the suspect vehicle pulling into our suspect house into the garage and the garage door shutting,” Wiegand said.
Minutes later, the SWAT team arrived with a big show of force.
“We pulled our armored vehicle up onto the front lawn of the house,” said Wiegand. “One of our hostage negotiators used the PA system and asked the people inside the house; he listed off the people’s names and said if someone can hear me, call 911.”
The suspect called 911 from inside the house and was patched through to a trained negotiator.
“Very quickly into the conversation, he relayed to the swat team that he’s agreed to come out of the house, and he’s going to come out of the front door, and he’s going to obey all commands,” Wiegand said.
The suspect then came out and surrendered to police without incident.
Once the suspect was in custody, the house was cleared and searched by SWAT before being handed over to the detective’s bureau.
