DEARBORN, Mich. – A teenager was killed by someone in a car she was following during a road rage encounter in Dearborn, and now a $20,000 reward is being offered in the case.

The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, near Warren Avenue and the Southfield Freeway Service Drive in Dearborn.

Rawan Baseti, 19, was shot and killed in the altercation.

Police say the teen was driving a black 2018 Jeep Cherokee, with friends also in the vehicle, when they followed a white 2015 Chrysler 200 to get a license plate number after a dangerous encounter with the driver of that vehicle.

They headed north on the service drive, before turning east onto Tireman, and then followed for two more miles.

That’s when the situation escalated, and the occupants of the other vehicle fired shots, killing Baseti, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said during a press conference on Friday, March 21, 2025.

“To say that my family and I are devastated or heartbroken is an understatement,” said Hani Baseti, the teen’s brother, during the press conference. ”Losing Rawan broke us.”

He urged the community to speak up so that his sister can finally “get the rest she deserves.”

A cash reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for information that leads to charges.

Tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or online. All tips will remain anonymous.

During the presser, the chief was also asked about the case’s connection to a barricaded situation in Detroit that happened after the shooting.

Shahin said there had been arrests, but those people of interest had been released pending further investigation because charges weren’t brought.

While there are people of interest in the case, the chief stressed they are looking for information on anyone at this point in the investigation.

Shahin urged the public to share any information they had, no matter how small it may seem.

The Dearborn Police Department is leading the investigation, but is working with local, state and federal partners, according to the chief.

They are advising the public to never pursue a vehicle during a traffic altercation and to report whatever information they do have to the police department.
