Protests against Trump tariffs held at US-Canada border in Detroit, Windsor

DETROIT – Demonstrators in Detroit and Windsor joined forces in a cross-border protest against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada on Saturday.

The protests occurred just as Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on Canada and Mexico are set to take effect on April 2.

From both sides of the border, protesters expressed their concerns about the tariffs.

“We’re protesting what’s happening to the United States and how we’re treating our neighbor,” one demonstrator stated. Organizers emphasized that the demonstration was a direct response to Trump’s tariffs against Canada.

“What’s happening with our allies, Canada, there’s a lot of people very upset,” another protester added.

Earlier this week, Trump defended the tariffs, claiming, “We’re going to be getting back some of the wealth that very, very foolish presidents gave away.”

Protesters also criticized Trump for his recent remarks about making Canada part of the U.S. Many took pride in the turnout, with one demonstrator noting, “By seeing this many people coming out on a cold day in Detroit, maybe it’ll have some impact.”

“There’s an awful lot of people here and we have our friends across the river looking at us,” another protester remarked.

Organizers indicated that more events are planned, including one in Lansing in two weeks.
