City talks future of Uniroyal site, potential sports complex, WNBA team in Detroit

Plan is part of larger initiative by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores

DETROIT – The city has confirmed to Local 4 that it is in early talks to develop a multisport complex and youth sports academy at the long-abandoned Uniroyal site along the Detroit Riverfront.

The project is part of a larger initiative by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, who aims to bring a WNBA team back to Detroit.

If a team comes to the Motor City, the site would serve as the team’s practice facility and headquarters.

The plan is still being discussed, meaning nothing has been finalized yet.

However, if it moves forward, it will require approval from the Detroit City Council.

The mayor’s office provided a statement regarding the talks.

“This kind of use of this Riverfront land fits perfectly into the mayor’s mission to return as much of Detroit’s riverfront as possible back to residents,” Mayor Mike Duggan’s office said in a statement.
