SUV kills 8-year-old girl, horse in crash with Amish buggy in west Michigan

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. – An 8-year-old girl and a horse were killed Wednesday morning in a crash on Michigan’s west side.

It happened at about 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, in Lawrence Township, roughly 30 miles west of Kalamazoo. According to authorities, a 31-year-old woman from Mattawan was driving a Ford SUV northbound on County Road 215 when they rear-ended an Amish buggy carrying a 12-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl.

The children were rushed to a hospital, where the girl died from her injuries. The boy remains critically injured.

The horse also died due to the crash.

The driver of the SUV was arrested and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on suspicion of operating under the influence of an unknown substance. The occupants in her vehicle were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
