Bomb threat disrupts Wayne County property tax payment deadline

No threats found inside

DETROIT – Workers at the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office in Detroit have received the all-clear after a bomb threat prompted police to evacuate the building Monday.

Authorities reported that the threat did not specifically mention the Treasurer’s Office by name. The office typically closes at 4:30 p.m. but it extended its hours until 6 p.m. Monday, March 31, to assist Wayne County residents facing a crucial deadline.

That deadline was for residents at risk of losing their homes due to unpaid property tax payments. Monday was the last day for property owners to establish a payment plan to avoid foreclosure.

The question now is whether that deadline will be extended because of the evacuations. Residents lost roughly four hours of time while the bomb squad searched the building.

We have reached out to the county to determine how today’s threat will impact those waiting to file their paperwork. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into the incident, but as of tonight, no arrests have been made.
