Wayne County man reportedly fails to shoplift, crashes during chase, runs into woods

PORT HURON, Mich. – A 49-year-old man from Harper Woods was arrested after allegedly failing to steal from a Menards in St. Clair County.

According to authorities, sheriff’s deputies were sent to a Port Huron store on reports of a man who had attempted to steal merchandise before running from the store. While the deputies were investigating at the Menards, the suspect reportedly returned to retrieve his truck.

When officials attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly sped off down Lapeer Road. Authorities said the chase was terminated due to unsafe speeds at the Allen Road roundabout, where the driver crashed into a wooded area.

After he ran into the woods, a Port Huron police K-9 was able to find him and he was taken into custody.

Ontario McDonald was charged Monday, March 31, with fleeing and eluding, possession of analogues, organized retail fraud, reckless driving and two counts of resisting and obstructing.

His bond was set at $15,000.
