Frustrated Inkster mother seeks answers for water quality issues

Residents report discolored water amid ongoing issues

INKSTER, Mich. – Water issues are plaguing residents in Inkster, with one local viewer reporting that her water has been discolored for days.

Shauna Belliner, an Inkster resident, reached out to Local 4 when she didn’t hear back from the city regarding her concerns.

“They haven’t come out here; they haven’t done anything. I’ve called maintenance,” Shauna said, expressing her frustration.

Shauna recorded a video on Wednesday showing discolored water coming from her kitchen faucet.

“It’s unsanitary and kind of nasty to live like this as a single mom in my situation,” she added.

Two days later, the water appeared clearer, but Shauna remained worried.

“It’s gotten to the point where we can’t shower, and we can’t drink this,” she explained.

As a single mother of three living in subsidized housing in Inkster, Shauna’s water bill is included in her rent. The Inkster Housing Commission covers water bills for low-income families. Shauna said that she hasn’t missed a rental payment, so we reached out to the city’s water and sewer division for clarification.

“I would tell her to reach out to the management team at Inkster Housing, where she pays her rent, and go from there,” said Jerome Bivins, the Inkster Director of Public Services. “We don’t shut people off because Inkster Housing pays the bill. If we have an issue with billing, we reach out to Inkster Housing, not an individual resident.”

We attempted to stop by the Inkster Housing Commission’s office, but it was closed for meetings and will reopen on Monday.

For now, Shauna is relying on bottled water and boiling her water while she waits to hear back from Inkster Housing. “I thought it was a city problem, but obviously it’s a housing problem, and I hope no one else is suffering like me,” she said.

A community meeting about ongoing water issues is scheduled for Monday night at Inkster City Hall. You can watch the meeting via Zoom here.
