America’s favorite holiday tradition faces hurdles as tariffs threaten fireworks supply

Producing fireworks in America is almost impossible

President Donald Trump’s latest tariff on Chinese products may impact the most American holiday of all, the Fourth of July.

That’s because most fireworks come directly from China.

Producing the product in the United States is almost impossible. That’s why some fireworks store owners are now on edge.

“I don’t have any problem with President (Donald) Trump. I understand what he’s doing. It’s just that certain businesses are going to be hurt more than others,” said Exotic Fireworks owner Patrick Mifsud.

Mifsud said every single product sold at his shop in Dearborn Heights is made in China. That’s almost the case for the entire industry.

“(About) 90% of the fireworks come from China. It’s just how it’s been for many, many years, and it’s continued to be that. So, we’re in a tough situation,” Mifsud said.

It is a significant concern for Mifsud and other fireworks store owners nationwide.

“Firework stores are talking to other stores in different states across the country right now, and everyone’s really concerned,” Mifsud said.

But they’re mainly worried about July 4, 2026.

“Right now, we’re all panicking, trying to figure it out. Next year is the celebration of 250 years. So, obviously, it’s supposed to be one of the bigger years. And we’re concerned how we’re gonna get our fireworks next year. Will we pay double the amount of money? Will we scramble? What are we going to do?” Mifsud said.

Mifsud said prices won’t be going up anytime soon for the consumer. But he wishes there was a different solution.

“I think obviously, in the long run, it could help our country out. But I’m not sure. Maybe they should put tariffs on certain things that are not affected like this. You can’t make fireworks in the United States. So maybe on certain items that we can’t make here - maybe you won’t put the tariff on those items,” Mifsud said.

We know that the American Pyrotechnics Association is teaming up with the National Fireworks Association, writing a letter to President Trump for him to make some type of change.
