Australian teacher charged after allegedly sending inappropriate messages to Michigan girl

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. – A schoolteacher in Australia is accused of sending inappropriate messages to a girl in Northern Michigan, officials announced.

Deputies had responded to a home in East Bay Township, after receiving a report that a girl had received inappropriate messages from adult men on social media platforms, according to a release from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities began investigating, and the case was assigned to a Grand Traverse detective with specialized training in forensic computer crimes, who is also associated with the Michigan State Police Computer Crime Unit.

After a joint investigation with the Australian Federal Police, a 28-year-old man from Australia was identified as the suspect.

The suspect was recently charged in Australia with possession of child abuse material obtained using a carriage service and is awaiting his next court date. No other details were released.

Homeland Security Investigations in Sault Ste. Marie also assisted in investigating this case.
