Tragic discovery: 3 bodies found in burning car on Detroit’s west side, including 9-year-old girl

Police believe mother and daughter were shot, and the girl was stabbed before being set on fire

Victims have been identified in a tragic and disturbing case on Detroit’s west side.

Police discovered three bodies inside a burning car early Sunday (April 6) morning, revealing that one of the victims is a 9-year-old girl.

Detroit police confirmed that the victims are connected to a man who was taken into custody shortly after the bodies were found.

The three deceased individuals include the man’s ex-girlfriend, her mother, and her 9-year-old niece.

Detectives believe the mother and daughter were shot to death, while the 9-year-old girl was stabbed before the fire was set.

On Monday, April 7, 2025, homicide detectives, with assistance from Michigan State Police, worked to positively identify the three victims, all of whom were found burned beyond recognition on the city’s west side.

Detroit police discovered the bodies inside a burnt-out SUV in an alley near 30th and Milford streets early Sunday morning.

Following the discovery, investigators tracked a person of interest to a house on Detroit’s east side, where they found a 4-year-old boy, unharmed and home alone.

Police have not yet identified the victims or the man in custody, other than stating that he was the ex-boyfriend of one of the women killed.

Detroit police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said that the ex-girlfriend, who had been caring for her 9-year-old niece, was shot, as was her mother.

He added that the child was stabbed in the neck before their bodies were transported to the location where they were set on fire.

Officials said the man they have in custody did not cooperate with the investigation.
