DETROIT – A misunderstanding led to a teen with a mental disability being shot in Detroit’s east side on Wednesday.

At around 1:30 p.m. on April 9, 2025, the teen was dropped off at Lenox and Warren by an Uber. Police said the address he intended to go to was put in wrong.

Detroit police said the teen has a mental disability and began to panic when he realized he was lost. He called a family member and was told to take a photo of where he was so the family member could come and pick him up.

Someone then approached him and asked why he was taking a photo of a house on the street. Police said this led to an argument, where the suspect threatened and, ultimately, shot the victim at least once.

Police said the teen was shot in the back. He was taken to a local hospital by first responders.

Although police said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries, they said he is in critical condition, and medical staff are making sure his organs can be saved as he recovers in the hospital.

A suspect has not yet been arrested.
