SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 20-year-old man said he’s happy to be alive after he was carjacked in Southfield.
“I was scared but happy that I’m alive, that’s all I can say,” said Joshua. “I count my blessings every day.”
According to authorities, two teenagers stole a 2023 Dodge Charger while Joshua was making a DoorDash delivery.
Joshua said he noticed he was being followed but assumed it was a police vehicle at first. He recalled having a gun pointed at him.
“I’m thankful I’m alive because my girlfriend is 13 weeks pregnant,” Joshua said. “The only thing I was thinking about was me not being there for my kid.”
Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren credited Joshua’s quick thinking and details given during his 911 call with helping with the arrest. Police reportedly located the stolen vehicle while Joshua was still on the phone with them.
Barren commended Joshua, saying he could have prevented further violent crime.
“When you look at the history of these violent suspect, you know that they’re working in tandem,” Barren said. “How many victims did Joshua’s actions prevent?”
Police spotted the vehicle near 12 Mile Road and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped off. The suspected car thief drove recklessly, reaching speeds exceeding 125 mph, driving with the lights off and using the shoulder to avoid cars.
A Southfield police officer initiated a PIT maneuver, causing the Dodge to lose control and strike a wall, near Eight Mile Road.
The Dodge Charger was totaled.
“It’s heartbreaking. I put so much hard work into that car,” Joshua said. “But my life is more important.”
Police said two teens were taken into custody at the scene and a ghost gun was recovered from inside the car. The teens had no prior criminal history.
Derek Butler, 18, was charged with carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, fleeing and eluding and two counts of felony firearm.
Prosecutors will decide if a 17-year-old will be charged as an adult Friday, April 18.
