Student pulls out knife during fight at school

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – Some staff members and a student were hurt after a fight at a school in Wayne County Tuesday morning.

At around 8:30 a.m. on April 15, two students were fighting at Cambridge Alternative High School. During the fight, school officials said a student pulled out a knife.

Staff members tried to break up the fight but were hurt by the knife that one of the students involved was wielding.

The staff members and student received minor injuries, according to officials from Garden City Public Schools.

According to Garden City police, both students involved in the fight were placed into custody.

The investigation is ongoing, and classes have resumed at the high school.

The school district sent the following message to families:

Dear Cambridge Families,

This morning, 4/15/25, we experienced a concerning incident at Cambridge Alternative High School involving a fight between students during which one student brandished a knife. The building was placed in lockdown consistent with Garden City Schools’ Emergency Operations Plan. Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of our staff, supported by the Garden City Police Department, the situation was quickly de-escalated and contained. We are relieved to report that student injuries appear to be minor, though some staff members sustained injuries. We are deeply grateful for the prompt response of all involved in ensuring the safety of our students and staff.
