Wayne County high school placed on lockdown after knife incident leaves student, staff member injured

The student has been arrested

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – A student brought a knife to a Wayne County high school before pulling it out during a fight around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Cambridge Alternative High School officials and police reported the altercation resulted in injuries to a student and a staff member.

According to Garden City Public Schools, the high school entered lockdown for part of the morning as police surrounded the building.

While a knife was displayed, no one was stabbed.

Garden City police told Local 4 a student brandished a knife during the physical altercation.

The department said school resource and patrol officers responded within moments of receiving a notification.

“Kids can’t go to school and they have to be afraid, you know, something might happen,” said Joann Solano-Vaseau, a grandparent.

A hall monitor, who is also a retired officer, quickly intervened to break up the fight. The tip of the knife poked him in the process.

“I didn’t know what to think because I didn’t expect that to happen here,” said Jesse English, a student.

Police confirmed that the students involved are in custody.

Local 4 went to the school and saw someone in handcuffs going into the back of a police car.

The district emphasized that it trains for similar scenarios and has policies in place to manage such incidents.

When asked how a student was able to bring a knife to school and what sparked the fight, an official noted that it remains unclear if tensions between the students stemmed from issues outside of school.

The school district sent the following message to families:
