DETROIT – A young child was killed after being hit by an ice cream truck on Detroit’s west side.
The incident occurred on Monday (April 14) around 7 p.m. on Diversey Avenue and Rutland Street.
Detroit police 6th Precinct Captain Shannon Hampton said the driver remained on scene and was taken into custody for questioning.
"So at approximately 7 p.m., just after we were notified of an accident here at Rutland Street and Diversey Avenue, where an ice cream truck hit a tender-aged child and fatally wounded that child. The driver did remain on scene and has been taken into custody," said Hampton.
She preached about how important it is for drivers to be mindful as the weather is changing and kids are outside playing.
"This time of year, with the weather breaking, it's very important that everybody's mindful that the children are out and they're playing. If you see school buses and ice cream trucks, just slow down a little and check your surroundings before proceeding past them," Hampton said.
Officials said they have their homicide fatal squad investigating the case and their chaplain squad are on the scene to support the officers and the families as well.
