‘There was no safety’: Detroit mother accused of encouraging daughter to fight at elementary school

The incident happened at Louis Pasteur Elementary School during dismissal time

DETROIT – A Detroit mother is accused of showing up at an elementary school to encourage her daughter to fight another 11-year-old student.

The incident happened at Louis Pasteur Elementary School during dismissal time.

The mom of the victim is still in disbelief that another parent would act this way, when they’re supposed to be setting an example.

“There was no safety, no security. No anything. Parents had to break this up,” said Karmen Davis, the victim’s mother. “You would think that a parent would say, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t be fighting. You should be getting along and talking things over. But instead, it’s complete violence.”

Davis says what you don’t see on the video is the woman hitting her daughter in the head twice.

“I’m hoping that mom is found, that mom goes to jail, and that mom gets what she needs to get done for justice to be served,” Davis said.

Davis says the girls got into a fight just moments before the chaos; security broke it up and went back into the building.

“You would have thought it would have been over at just the fight,” Davis said.

But a few minutes later, the angry mother comes back looking for round two while the family members of the 11-year-old victim have no choice but to watch on.

“The video was recorded by my son,” said Davis.

You can hear the mother calling the 11-year-old girl all sorts of names the entire time. DPSCD officials are looking into the situation, but criminal charges may be coming.

“I know that the police did come to her home. But she’s not been able to be located. So, right now, she is on the run. Hopefully, somebody knows her or can pinpoint where she is and call the police,” Davis said.

Davis believes the fight would have never happened if a staff member or security guard had been outside.

“I just wish that DPSCD will make sure that it’s safety outside for the kids at all times. Just because the school’s closing or it’s dismissal, it doesn’t mean that that part of your job is over,” Davis said.

The victim is expected to be ok. She lost consciousness but will recover. The entire matter remains under investigation.

DPSCD sent Local 4 the following statement.

“Unfortunately, there was a fight that escalated at Pasteur Tuesday that involved students and a parent; the district has administered discipline to the students based on preliminary findings. We condemn this unacceptable behavior and want to assure our community that we are taking this matter very seriously. We have reported the incident to law enforcement and are cooperating fully with their investigation. We are committed to supporting our students, staff, and families; our school counselors are available to assist any student who may need it.”
