GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The trial for Christopher Schurr, the former Grand Rapids police officer charged in the 2022 death of Patrick Lyoya, began Monday.

The first witness the prosecution called was Lyoya’s friend David Bukureo.

Bukureo said Lyoya had slept at his house the night before where they hung out.

The next witness was Aime Tuyishime, Patrick’s close friend and passenger in the car the day of the shooting.

“He was like a brother to me,” Tuyishime said about Lyoya during testimony.

During Tuyishime’s trial, the prosecution played the cell video Tuyishime took of the incident.

The next person to testify was a Grand Rapids resident who witnessed the struggle between Lyoya and Schurr in his front yard.

“I heard the pop, and I looked and then he stepped back and he said, ‘officer involved shooting’,” Wayne Butler said.

Butler is seen in the cell phone video telling Lyoya to comply.

“I was just telling him, ‘Man come on I know it might now be your day man, but you got to stay down to live’,” Butler said.
